Nowadays there’s a real chance that an FBI agent could come knocking at your door.

Maybe you joined a certain religious club at school or you live in a particular neighborhood known for having a high-density of people of a certain race. Whatever the reason, you might now be at risk for having an FBI agent come knocking at your door.

FBI home investigations are looking more and more like racial and religious profiling. They, along with ICE, come knocking at peoples’ doors and interrogate, arrest or even deport innocent people.

What are your constitutional rights? Here’s how you can protect yourself:

If an FBI agent comes knocking at your door, when you answer, ask to speak to your attorney. You may provide the agents your name, but you should consult with an attorney before providing them with any other information. The FBI investigates criminal activity and any information you do give them, even if you know and believe it to be innocent, could be used against you.

Next, don’t allow the agent to enter your home without a search warrant. They may ask to enter, but you have no legal obligation to allow them to enter without a warrant. When you answer the door, step outside and close the door behind you so that they cannot enter or pressure you to go inside. If they do possess a warrant, read the warrant carefully to understand what they can and cannot search and seize in your home. If they persist and do not have a search warrant, ask for their business cards and inform them that your attorney will contact them.

Always be polite, but firm. Keep your calm. You do not have to answer any of their questions. The First Amendment guarantees religious and political freedoms to people in the USA. If you feel you are being targeted by law enforcement for these beliefs speak to an attorney to learn more about your rights.
