Longtime Fox news anchor Gretchen Carlson filed a sexual harassment suit against Fox News chairman Roger Ailes.
For the first time in major news media, a sexual harassment suit has been filed against a huge media figure. Gretchen Carlson filed a sexual harassment suit claiming that Mr. Ailes asked her for a sexual relationship and accusing him of being a serial sexual harasser in the office.
Ms. Carlson claims that after a meeting with Mr. Ailes in the fall, she voiced her concerns over her treatment at the company, to which, she claims, Mr. Ailes stated that they should have pursued a sexual relationship a long time ago. When she turned him down, she claims that she faced retaliation. The retaliation included not only a reduction in salary, but less on-air time, and no contract renewal.
Gretchen Carlson joined Fox in 2005. Since then she has stated that she had also complained more than once that she faced casual sexism by co-anchors on and off air.
Mr. Ailes claims the allegations against him are not only false, but that they have are in retaliation for the network not renewing Gretchen Carlson’s contract. Mr. Ailes has the support of Rupert Murdoch, his boss, as well as some employees. Even Ms. Carlson has stated positive things about Mr. Ailes in her book from just a few years ago.
This sexual harassment lawsuit continues to play out in the public eye.
