Executive Director of UNAIDS, Michel Sidibé, is stepping down in June 2019, after an external report accused him of leading an organization rife with sexual harassment and abuse of power.
The United Nations program that Sidibé led was focused on fighting AIDS and HIV. The program is overseen by 22 governments and other AIDS-related organizations. Sidibé is stepping down 6 months before his term was set to finish.
His resignation comes on the heels of allegations that he mishandled sexual harassment claims and protected the assailants. One UNAIDS employee claims she was offered a promotion in exchange for dropping her sexual harassment allegation against a U.N. Assistant Secretary General.
Although investigations into the claims of sexual harassment occurred, such as in the above case, the victim argues that the investigation was deeply flawed, and has since been reopened.
