What are LGBTQ students’ rights at school? What if they face discrimination and harassment?

LGBTQ students’ rights at school include the following protections from teachers and school staff and administrators:

  • Protection from other students who bully or harass them for being LGBTQ.
  • The right to fair and equal treatment.
  • The right to free speech.
  • The right to privacy.
  • Basic respect.

Who falls under LGBTQ?

LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning.

Although LGBTQ students have all of these rights by law, many teachers and school officials are not aware that they are required to protect their LGBTQ students and therefore, many of these students still face bullying, harassment, and discrimination. Not only teachers, but the community at large still does not have an awareness of these protections.

What can LGBTQ students do to help themselves?

It’s still recommended that these students educate themselves as much as they can on their rights so that they can be their own advocates.
