Walmart May Face Hundreds of Gender Bias Cases
Despite a the Supreme Court stopping 1.5 million female employees from forming a class-action lawsuit against Walmart for gender bias due to their complaints having too little in common, the women can still pursue individual suits against the retail giant. The EEOC, has however, said that likely did discriminate against 178 women by paying them less and/or not promoting them.
Gender Discrimination in the Veterinary Workplace
A new small study from the UK finds that female veterinarians and technicians suffer from sexism in the veterinary world. The study, which was published online in Vet Record, found that sex discrimination for female employees was prevalent in the veterinary workplace. The discrimination came from not only clients, but also male colleagues. One of the most common instances that female veterinarians dealt with in regard to sex discrimination at work was clients asking for a second opinion on their diagnosis from male veterinarians.
Gender Discrimination Case Against Virginia’s Fairfax School District Thrown Out
A judge has thrown out a gender discrimination case aimed at Virginia’s Fairfax School District. The lawsuit was filed by an 18-year old former student who alleged that he was the victim of gender discrimination after the school district determined that the student had sexually harassed another student. The student argued in court that the school district inadequately investigated the sexual harassment allegations and that they also violated his due process rights, however, the judge found that there was not sufficient evidence to support his claims that the school acted unfairly or biased toward him due to his gender and dismissed the case.
Study Says Female Pediatricians Made 6% Lower Pay Than Male Colleagues
Pediatrician Life and Career Experience Study looked at 998 early to mid-career pediatricians in 2016 and found that female pediatricians made 87 cents on the dollar compared to males. That 6% was a nearly $8,000 annual pay difference according to the study. The study controlled for factors that could influence career income such as marital status, missing work to be with sick children, owning their own practice, or working in academic centers.
