In a new poll recently released by the Siena College Survey found that 45% of New York women surveyed had experienced some form of sexual harassment in their life, reports the NY Post.
That percentage is up significantly from the prior year which recorded only 36% experiencing some form of sexual harassment in their lives.
Additionally, nearly 70% of poll respondents (female and male) reported that they believed that sexual harassment in the workplace was a significant problem.
This poll comes years after the #MeToo movement struck a chord in society and brought the issues of sexual harassment in the workplace to the forefront of news. More women, and men, are coming forward with their allegations of sexual harassment and are holding powerful figures accountable for their misconduct.
It’s not just sexual harassment either, other issues that are now openly being talked about include discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation. The poll states that 68% of New Yorkers say that they’ve encountered racial and ethnic minority discrimination and have been treated unfairly.
