If you have a stalker at work then there are steps you can take to try to stop the workplace harassment, and fast.
It’s important to stop the stalker at work right away before it escalates further.
• When trying to stop your stalker at work, remember, they’re committing an unwanted behavior and you don’t owe them anything. You don’t have to be polite. Be firm when you state that their behavior is unwanted and that it must stop now.
• You do not need to have a reason to want them to stop! You don’t need to be in a committed relationship. Just because you may be single, does not mean you deserve to suffer from their conduct. If they are creating a hostile work environment for you, there are things you can do about it!
• Report their behavior to your management and human resources. File a formal complaint. This may be difficult for you if you work with the stalker, but it’s critical that you follow through. Make a record of your complaints by filing them in writing or emails. Ask coworkers who have also witnessed the stalking behavior to write formal accounts backing up your story.
• It is illegal for management and human resources to retaliate against you for filing a complaint of harassment in the workplace. You do not have to worry about losing your job for filing a complaint.
• If management and human resources do not follow through and you’re fearful for your life take it a step further and let others know about your situation. If your stalker made threats or they’re trying to follow you home late at night, then the situation has become dangerous and you may need help.
• First, if you’re scared to leave work by yourself then ask a coworker or family friend to escort you off the premises either to your car or to your home.
• Then contact the police and tell them the situation. File a restraining order against the stalker. If you have evidence that you’ve been filing complaints about this person for a while, then the police will most likely want to err on the side of caution and grant the restraining order.
• You’re most likely not the first victim. By following through and complaining about this person, you may not only be saving yourself from a dangerous situation, but other potential victims.
